And Tom has helped with the introduction of GMO’s first retail product, the quality ETF stock symbol Q-L-T-Y-G-M-O has been institutional since they launched in 1977. This is the first time they’re putting out a product for retail. GMO has released last quarter their first retail product an ETFI love the symbol QLTY.
And definitely, their retail market participation is significantly lower than you can see in the U.S. And I did the math, and I think at that point in time, roughly speaking, assets in ETS were roughly just 10 percent, 12 percent of assets in mutual funds and I was pretty convinced that that number was to increase significantly.
By ’08 and ’09, look, there were bankruptcies everywhere in every industry from retail to telecom. There are a ton of expenses, and they’re getting higher with compliance and marketing and reporting and investor relationship, et cetera. MIELLE: Yeah, that kept — RITHOLTZ: Which is crazy. MIELLE: Exactly. MIELLE: Exactly.
00:03:14 [Mike Greene] So that was actually an outgrowth from my experience coming out of Wharton and you mentioned the, the, you know, the transition of people who tended to be skilled at math or physics into finance. So any compliance people listening, I’m just spitballing here. That’s Barry saying it. It once was.
We have institutional clients, we have retail clients, we have, you know, pension funds, we have endowments. Or we do, we, we do these regular touch points and that regular communication, whether it’s to the institutional community, to the retail community, to our endowment community, whatever that might be.
Oil prices go up or down, you know, fashion retail goes in and out, unlike for example, selling an ingredient for pharmaceuticals, where they need the ingredient and you’re inspected by the FDA. RITHOLTZ: So it’s different math then I need 100x winner versus 99? And the question is, you know, how high we can build?
Tell us a little bit about what you do on Twitter and how was it getting that through legal and compliance? RIEDER: Well, first of all, anything I tweet goes through legal and compliance before it gets out there, first part. How are we doing in literacy versus math versus science? I use immense amount of data and analysis.
And I, and I really like the application of math and statistics and computer science to markets. You know, you run an RIA, the SEC just comes knocking every once in a while to say, Hey, just wanna make sure the compliance program’s all set up. You learn the math that can help you with, with market making operations.
LINDZON: So first year at ’01, ‘02, you have Apple and they blew out the store model, the retail model, which no one thought. You know, I’m just a retail Yahoo finance kind of guy. Um, case anybody that says anything, non-compliant, compliance tracks that also the watch list is just sort of fun. RITHOLTZ: Right.
