Here is a graph of the year-over-year change in shelter from the CPI report and housing from the PCE report this morning, both through May 2024. CPI Shelter was up 5.4% year-over-year in May, down from 5.5% in April, and down from the cycle peak of 8.2% in March 2023. Housing (PCE) was up 5.5% YoY in May , down from 5.6% in April, and down from the cycle peak of 8.3% in April 2023.
The BEA released the Personal Income and Outlays report for May: Personal income income increased $114.1 billion (0.5 percent at a monthly rate) in May , according to estimates released today by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Disposable personal income (DPI), personal income less personal current taxes, increased $94.0 billion (0.5 percent) and personal consumption expenditures (PCE) increased $47.8 billion (0.2 percent).

The BEA's Personal Income and Outlays report revealed inflation rose at its slowest monthly in the past six months. Core PCE, the Fed's favored measure of inflation, was up 0.1% from April and was up 2.6% year-over-year. Both readings were consistent with their respective forecasts.

Consumer sentiment fell to a 7-month low in June according to the final report for the Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index. The index dropped 0.9 points (-1.3%) to 68.2 from May's final reading. The latest reading was below the forecast of 65.6.

Consumer attitudes are measured by two monthly surveys: the University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index (MCSI) and the Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index (CCI). In June, the MCSI fell to its lowest level in seven months to 68.2. Meanwhile, the CCI inched down to 100.4.

With the release of May's report on personal incomes and outlays, we can now take a closer look at "real" disposable personal income per capita. At two decimal places, the nominal 0.41% month-over-month change in disposable income comes to 0.42% when we adjust for inflation. The year-over-year metrics are 3.13% nominal and 0.55% real.
Personal income ( excluding transfer receipts ) rose 0.5% in May and is up 4.6% year-over-year. However, when adjusted for inflation using the BEA's PCE Price Index, real personal income (excluding transfer receipts) was up 0.5% month-over-month and up 2.0% year-over-year.
